چکیده

An Au-SiO2-Au (metal-insulator-metal; MIM) surface-plasmon-polariton (SPP) guide is schematically presented in Fig. S1a. As the name “MIM” implies, a structural symmetry exists with respect to the mirror plane that cuts through the center of the SiO2 layer and is parallel to the x–y plane. As a result, supported SPP modes in the guide can be classified into two major types, each with its own distinctive eigenstates [1–5]. One is symmetric (S), and the other is antisymmetric (AS). In a symmetric mode, the electric-field distribution is symmetric around the mirror plane, while in an anti-symmetric mode, the distribution is anti-symmetric, as shown in Fig. S2.

Nanofocusing in a metal-insulator-metal gap plasmon waveguide with a three-dimensional linear taper

The development of techniques for efficiently confining photons on the deep sub-wavelength spatial scale will revolutionize scientific research and engineering practices. The efficient coupling of light into extremely small nanofocusing devices has been a major challenge in on-chip nanophotonics because of the need to overcome various loss mechanisms and the on-chip nanofabrication challenges. ...

Adiabatic Nanofocusing in Hybrid Gap Plasmon Waveguides on the Silicon-on-Insulator Platform.

We present an experimental demonstration of a new class of hybrid gap plasmon waveguides on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. Created by the hybridization of the plasmonic mode of a gap in a thin metal sheet and the transverse-electric (TE) photonic mode of an SOI slab, this waveguide is designed for efficient adiabatic nanofocusing simply by varying the gap width. For gap widths greater...

Three-dimensional nanofocusing of light through surface plasmon scattering by a lump-like defect in metal/dielectric/metal slot waveguides

We show that scattering of a surface plasmon by lump-like defects on the walls of a metal/dielectric/metal slot waveguide may be accompanied by 3D nanofocusing of light. Such nanofocusing results in the emergence of “hot spots” of nanometer size with a field intensity several orders higher than in the incident plasmon. This effect takes place only if the lump size is smaller than some critical ...

Hybrid Dielectric-loaded Nanoridge Plasmonic Waveguide for Low-Loss Light Transmission at the Subwavelength Scale

The emerging development of the hybrid plasmonic waveguide has recently received significant attention owing to its remarkable capability of enabling subwavelength field confinement and great transmission distance. Here we report a guiding approach that integrates hybrid plasmon polariton with dielectric-loaded plasmonic waveguiding. By introducing a deep-subwavelength dielectric ridge between ...
